(a little wishful thinking — can't hurt ;) )
Not too many changes lately, I'm afraid. Too many tasks at work as usual, which means less energy for that which is most important.
I've put down some preliminary notes on new features for v4 and the first lines of code have emerged; I never go into any details concerning my code but let it suffice to say that my emphasis is on still cleaner code and the most optimal performance, the latter mainly in terms of optimised database handling.
On a strictly technical note, I've re-worked my testserver environment, which is based on the free VMware Server. That too has taken a great deal of my focus away from regular web development - but it had to be done.
I'm from the old webschool that used to preach faster page loadtimes through wellformed lightweight HTML - and I stick to that, even though the bandwidth is a gazillion times greater now compared to good old 1996. But in this day and age, one simply cannot run a CMS without fancy features like Ajax (and no, it does not necessarily signify that awful itchy-scratchy soap stuff!), so that has become a priority. Something old and something new :)
And as I have mentioned previously, I've decided to get back to the wonderful world of the Mozilla-based development framework XUL, which also works beatifully together with Ajax.
To the enlighted visitor, this should automatically ring a bell: Yes, it means that I will fully embrace the superiority of the
Mozilla Firefox browser against its nearest competitors and develop a version of the administration section solely in XUL for the benefit
of Firefox users.
It is going to take a while but it will be worth it!
But not to worry: Full crossbrowser compatibility is now and always my primary objective - how badly I would like to, I can't ignore the fact that there are other -in my opinion slightly inferior- browsers out there with quite substantial market shares. v4 will work for them too - Firefox users will just be favored to a certain extent.
